When is a Ford GT40 not a Ford GT40? When it's a Mercury. That's right, a Mercury! In the midst of Ford's "Total Performance" racing dominance in the 1960s-highlighted by the legendary GT40's 1-2-3 finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966-Ford Motor Company's Lincoln-Mercury Division wanted a share of the spotlight to help promote its new Mercury Cougar.

Mercury GT40 race cars-P/1016 and P/1047-were more than just showpieces. Given Mk IIB upgrades that included roll cage, aluminum instrument panel, lighter body sections, and fire suppression, they competed in the 24 Hours of Daytona in May 1967, with some big-name drivers at the wheel.

The 1967 Daytona 24 Hours race saw the Mercury GT40 MKII, adorned with car number 4, compete in a grueling endurance battle. Piloted by a team of skilled drivers, including some of the era's top talents, the car showcased both speed and reliability. What set this race apart was the intense competition and the challenging conditions faced by the drivers throughout the 24-hour duration. Despite facing stiff competition from rival teams, the Mercury GT40 MKII demonstrated exceptional performance, navigating the Daytona International Speedway with precision and determination. This race stood out not only for its thrilling on-track action but also for the enduring legacy it left in the annals of motorsport history, highlighting the resilience and skill of both the drivers and the machines they piloted.
